avenue and northwest d.c.. mostly cloudy this morning even a few sprinkles have been falling across areas in southern maryland and the lower eastern shore. we'll become partly sunny this afternoon. lunchtime 51 with a high today around 55 and a north wind oh 5, 10 miles an hour. little disturbance coming out of the north carolina managed to sneak enough moisture up across oh southeastern virginia and even into the northern neck, the lower eastern shore. a couple of sprinkles up to dunkirk. annapolis one or two drops as well but the heavier stuff is on the lower eastern shore. this is moving to the north northeast and cambridge along route 50 a little shower here in the next hour and even in easton this may get you too here in the next one, two hours. 32 in the shenandoah valley but 44 in fredericksburg. we'll see sun this afternoon with a high around 55. it's 5:00 a.m. monika samtani, timesaver traffic and still smiling so i think that's good although there's red on the map.

there's a little bit of red on the map and that is just construction in parts of the area. really no big deals to report and the volumes are so light that if you're heading out the door right now i don't think it's going to be an issue to get to work. northbound 395 to the 14th street bridge inbound 66 to the roosevelt bridge. some construction on the -- outbound side of the key bridge as you come in on canal road. that could slow you down a bit. let's take you outside live show you what it looks like on the northbound side of 395 here at duke street. no issues to report it's nice and light right up the line to the bridge span. now pack to the taps -- back to the maps the time coming in from baltimore, the bw parkway into greenbelt and beyond into cheverly doing just fine. here's 270 in clarksburg. back at 5:10. back to you. there's an active amber alert right now in virginia. >> police say they have reason to believe the suspects may be headed for the d.c. area. deputies in halifax county are

looking for 1-year-old alexis rose carwile. she's 2'" tall and weighs 20 pounds with dark brown hair and brown eyes, she was last seen wearing -- police suspect she was abducted by 41-year-old eric eugene black and 35-year-old jennifer dawn carwile. they are believed to be driving -- if you spot this car, you're asked to call authorities. prosecutors are stunned by a not guilty verdict in last year's deadly stabbing at bowie state university. >> we never doubt it. because we know our friend. >> truth prevails through all of this. truth prevailed that's all i can say. >> friends and family of the defendant alexis simpson celebrated after the decision last night. a prince george's county jury acquitted simpson of all seven charges against her. defense attorneys argued that

simpson was acting in self- defense in september of 2011 when she slashed her roommate dominique frazier across the throat. >> we are very disappointed tonight. we presented what we thought was very clear and strong evidence and there are no winners. >> her emotion was very genuine. and she is tremendously remorseful for this incident. it has affected her emotionally in ways that you can only imagine. >> now simpson cried in court when the verdict was read and her attorneys say she was the victim of bullying that was part of the testimony. now that this is behind her she's going to continue her college education but not at bowie state. we're learning more about wednesday night's deadly shoot involving a prince george's county deputy. they say he attempted to serve a temporary peace order on franklin sweeney jr.. a woman let him inside and

that's when he saw sweeney appear to be holding what was a black handgun. the firearm was a replica handgun it turns out. the deputy is on leave while the shooting is investigated. he's not -- . >> but this morning, former cia director david petraeus will be on capitol hill to testify about the deadly consulate attack in libya two months ago. 9news now reporter surae chinn is live on the hill with more on this story. good morning surae. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. well, lawmakers say this will strictly be on the investigation of the attacks in benghazi. former cia director david petraeus will be grilled on what he knew when before, during and after the attacks. the closed door hearing will be his first public appearance since resigning and admitting to an affair with his biographer a week ago. yesterday the intelligence committee members were given a timeline of events and shown

realtime classified videos captured from security cameras at the consulate and a drone overhead. >> director petraeus went to tripoli. he interviewed many of the people as i understand it that were involved. and so the opportunity to get his views i think are very important. -- is very important. >> are there still questions out there? you bet. and we're going to continue to work to get those answers. >> reporter: it took ten days for the fbi to gather the video from the security cameras at the consulate. the hearings again will go on today. it will be day two of these hearings and then the next half hour i'm going to break down the timeline that was given to this intelligence committee. back to both of you. >> all right, that's surae chinn reporting live on capitol hill. we'll be hearing more from her later on in the morning. time now for the latest your money report. >> jessica doyle is here with today's headlines. wall street still struggling.

i'll be back with more at 45:40. back to you -- 5:40. back to you. david petraeus admitted having tan affair -- an affair a week ago. but despite that abrupt departure. petraeus will be on capitol hill this morning. >> his knowledge is needed. lawmakers want to know what petraeus knew as the consulate attack in libya unfolded back in september. 9news now reporter surae chinn is live on the hill this morning previewing today's hearing. surae good morning. >> reporter: good morning to oath of you. it should be an interesting day on capitol hill but lawmakers say they're going to stay en pointe with the benghazi attacks. the justice department says petraeus' affair did not put the nation at risk. well, yesterday's hearing really gave a better picture of what happened in benghazi. that was a five hour event that ended with the killing of ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. lawmakers were first shown a cell phone video of the first attack. it revealed the initial attack was not well planned and in

part was inspired by televised scenes of protestors storming the american embassy in cairo because of an anti-muslim video running on the internet. others seemed to be more interested in looting. it left the consulate in flames. the surviving americans then retreat today a cia safe -- retreated to a cia safe house a mile away but then there was a four hour lull in the fighting. this gave time for the rescue teams to arrive but this time the attackers brought mortar, this was captured by security cameras and a drone overhead. more organized and more deliberate. there were five rounds, two missed, three hit. >> number one were mistakes made. guys we know mistakes were made and we have to learn from that and our membership asked some very tough and hard questions of the leadership today and we're going to continue to do that. >> reporter: this will begin day two of the hearings with petraeus. two more hearings next week

then a public hearing that should reveal a lot more information that will be declassified. back to you. >> surae chinn live on the hill this morning. we have some breaking developments on the amber alert out of virginia. police now have one of the suspects in custody. the man they were looking for in the couple of adults. deputies in halifax county issued the amber alert for 1- year-old alexis rose carwile. she vanished yesterday afternoon, just a description if you see her -- now police suspect that alexis was abducted by her parents. 41-year-old eric black and 35- year-old jennifer carwile. however black is the one who is now in custody. investigators thought the couple might be headed to d.c. because black has relatives in the d.c. area. police say the mother and child are still missing.

they may be driving in a -- again, this is a -- a d.c. high school principal is scheduled to be arraigned today. thelma jarrett is principal at coolidge high school in northwest washington. she turned herself in yesterday on a misdemeanor assault charge. this stems from a november 2nd fight that happened after coolidge high school football game. the alleged victim is the former afterschool coordinator who claims they were punched and kicked but not seriously injured by the high school principal. coming up on 5:35. if you're just waking up it's time for another your money report now. >> jessica doyle is back and monitoring the fiscal cliff. jess? >> thanks so much. today president obama is meeting with congressional leaders at the white house

about the fiscal cliff. the cliff of course is that package of spending cuts and tax hikes that will hit all of us in the new year if congress doesn't act to avert it. joining us now with her finger on the pulse of the nation. the co-founder of pock box. thanks so much for coming in this morning. it's a local start-up. what you do is you -- get e- mails from voters and you authenticate them into letters and you hand deliver them to congress. it's fascinating what you guys do. but what are you finding? is there open outcry about the fiscal cliff? >> now that the election is over, we're seeing an uptick in activity around issues remitted to the fiscal cliff and -- related to the fiscal cliff and primarily we're seeing a lot of energy around sequestration, middle class tax cuts, and this is a really tricky time for people. so they're very concerned. >> well, let's take a look at some of the data points that you actually have from the letters that are coming into

pop box. let's take a look specifically at sequestration. what are the findings there? i mean, it seems like people are very much opposed to this happening. >> overwhelmingly about three in four of pop box users oppose sequestration. and they're really concerned about the economy and what sequestration would do to their economy and a possibility of a recession. but there are one in four people that do want to just get something done and they support sequestration. >> let's talk about the middle class tax cut act. what are the findings there? i knows this something that's been trending for you guys recently. >> yes, the middle class tax cut is trending on pop vox which means that people are more and more weighing in on -- on the tax kit itself and then -- cut itself and then writing letters to their member of congress. we're seeing about 80% of people supporting the middle class tax cut. >> people want more money in

their paychecks and more money come tax time. the middle class tax cut people against it make this argument, this is from hoosier patriot -- lots of -- lots of passion with folks writing in about this. >> absolutely. this is a tricky time. and this is a really great opportunity for people to get on to pop vox and directly communicate with the members of congress and i think legislators want to hear from constituents but not more 90s, but more direct -- noise, but more direct action as to what exactly to do. >> let's look at the other side. these are people for the middle class tax cut act. political moesel says -- how can people speak out on pop vox? what's the easiest way for them to do that? >> pop vox is like a dashboard for a car. you can gauge what's happening moving forward with congress

our day planner, we start with the clouds. we're going to get some sunshine mixing in here to midday and more so this afternoon. with a high of 55. that happens 2:00, 3:00. by 5:00, we're -- 4:00 back 52 and by 8:00 back into the mid 40s and another night mid 30s in town. this morning though the showers are out of north carolina and just snuck into southern maryland. got a couple of sprinkles also off to the east. eastern prince george's county into southern anne arundel county. across the bay easton down to cambridge although it's weaker than what we were looking at oh 30 minutes or so ago. back to solomons and the northern neck, some of that is ground clutter but i spoke to bill, he said he still had a few light sprinkles mixing in. 37 gaithersburg and 38 ashburn and centerville 39. to the south a little milder but not much. fort belvoir at 42. and in upper marlboro this morning you've got clouds and maybe a sprinkle near and 40. but other than some wet streets

here and there not going to amount to much. michael & son weather camera good visibility in spite of the clouds. light winds can the temperature of 43. about the same as the windchill. in fact winds are pretty light now and i expect them northerly 5, maybe 10 miles an hour this afternoon. we're going to watch this little storm system pull off to the north and the east with it will go the showers and with it will go the clouds. and building in behind it, we're going to look pretty nice actually here as we see clearing skies tartest build in -- start to build in for the afternoon temperatures in the 55-degree range. in fact looking aheadlong range to the wednesday forecast coming up next week, the big travel forecast. going to the pacific northwest, there could be some rain here. temps in the upper 40s but this looks to be the worst weather across the entire country with 60s on the california coast. got low 60s in denver. even northern plains and 40s and 50s very comfortable with sunshine on wednesday. no trouble traveling there. we got the southern plains. could be some storms in south texas. over to florida, the southeast, yeah looking pretty nice although charleston on
